Lesson 12 - Sabbath: A Day of Celebration

"By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested form all his work. And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of created that he had done." - Genesis 2:2-3 NIV

After God finished creating the earth in six days, He rested on the seventh day.  In six days Go provided for life, and on the seventh day, He provided for love. If we're having a hard time finding love during the week, we should be able to find it on the Sabbath.

God is almighty and all-powerful and does not need to rest, yet He rested on the Sabbath as an example for us. He knew humanity would need one day a week to refresh and reenergize so God gave us the Sabbath.

Holy: Set apart, set aside

The Sabbath day itself is holy and needs to be set apart from the other days of the week as a special day. Think of it as a memorial day to commemorate all that God has created and done for us.  We keep the Sabbath day holy by recognizing that God is our Creator and we belong to him. The Sabbath is that one special day of the week that we set aside solely for God and the needs of others.

In addition to keeping the Sabbath holy on Saturday, we also keep the Sabbath by working 6 days a week leading up to the Sabbath. Our Creator did not call us to be lazy during the week but to spend it getting work done in preparation for the rest we have in the Sabbath.
